An alternative to exterior rigid foam, ThermaWrap R5.0—Tyvek bonded to R-5 polyester insulation—can be installed as part of a rainscreen system under most sidings except cedar shakes and shingles. It comes in 25-pound, 4- by 40-foot rolls, with uninsulated flaps for taping pieces together. DuPont estimates a 15% to 20% higher installed cost than 1-inch XPS with standard house wrap.
