Ok, we don't exactly have a soundtrack for this one, but we at JLC think it's exciting enough that it deserves something like the Beastie Boys overdub to the new Star Wars movie coming in May.
Steve Demetrick will be making his debut on the expo floor of JLC Live teaching four Building Clinics:
- The Basics of High Performance Walls.
- Detailing Exterior Rigid Foam
- Innies and Outies - Two Ways to Install Windows.
- Don't Trust the Cable Guy - Making Penetrations Leakproof.
Demetrick is no stranger to high-performance homes. His company - DeMetrick Housewrights, founded in 1998 - built the first PHIUS Certified Passive House in Rhode Island. The house was designed by JLC contributor, Steve Baczek, with whom Demetrick has collaborated on a number of important JLC articles.
Here's why each of their articles is a must-read if you're in the business of building high-performance homes:
Installing High-Performance Windows- Windows that provide upwards of R-7 are becoming increasingly more common, and when installed in a super-insulated, fat wall, there are a number of decisions and details to work out.
Detailing a Superinsulated Slab- This one clarifies how much insulation you should be using in the foundation of a high-performance home. It's a lot more than is usually done: Proportionally, the R-value of the sub-slab insulation should be half that of the above-grade walls, or roughly one-quarter the R-value of the lid.
A Basement Floor Without Concrete- This one might be a must-read for anyone building homes with basements, high-performance or not. Who says you need to pour a concrete floor?
These articles will give you a taste of why Steve Demetrick is also a must-see at 2018 JLC Live.
