The tapered center section of the newel is made up of four frame…
I made an inner box post to reinforce the frame-and-panel assembly and to create a structural core the could be fastened to blocking on the floor and on the first stair riser for sturdy connections. In the accompanying slideshow, you’ll see how I:
- Joined strips of 3/4-inch plywood to fashion the inner column
- Fastened the straight and tapered frame-and-panel assemblies to the inner post
- Added fillers and backing at the bottom of the inner post to prepare for structural attachments and the decorative frame-and-panel base
