Cordless Trim Routers

Cordless technology has made its way into nearly every tool category. Smaller tools, like trim routers (also known as “laminate” routers), make good use of the technology because this is one tool where a cord can really be a nuisance. As of this writing, there are four manufacturers that make cordless trim routers: Makita, Bosch, Ridgid, and Ryobi.

Makita KTR01Z

The Makita KTR01Z features a brushless motor for longer run time, increased power and speed, and longer tool life than traditional, comparable brushed motors. It has variable speed control dial (10,000-30,000), soft start, aluminum housing and base, and electronic speed control which maintains constant speed under load. It also has a locking button to prevent accidental start-up. The router is compatible with Makita’s bases and attachments that now outfit its RT0700C, RT0701C. Additional features include LED lights and vacuum connection capabilities. Cost: $129 (tool only); $345 (kit includes two 5.0Ah batteries, rapid charger, plunge base, case, and edge guide.

Bosch GKF12V-25N

Bosch GKF12V-25N has a 12V trim router available - this one runs on Bosch’s 12V Max platform. It has an EC Brushless motor and a unique design that positions your hand directly over the surface being routed. The motor runs at a max 13,000 RPMs and is reported to have a runtime of about 23ft. of round-over per Ah of battery. An internal sensor stops the motor if the router is dropped while running. Cost: $150 (tool only).

RIDGID 86044B 18V

The RIDGID 86044B 18V compact router features a brushless motor for longer runtime and longer motor life. It can reportedly cut up to 400 ft. of laminate on a 5Ah battery (assuming when equipped with a laminate cutter when trimming countertops). It’s variable speed (17,000-25,000 RPMs), has a micro-adjust dial, soft start technology, and LED light. It also comes with a lifetime limited warranty. Cost: $119 (tool only) $129 (kit with 2.0Ah battery and charger).

RYOBI 18V Palm Router

The RYOBI 18V Palm Router runs on Ryobi’s ONE Lithium Ion battery platform, which has battery options ranging from 1.3Ah to 6.0Ah sizes. The motor spins at 29,000 RPMs and like all other routers its size, it has a 1/4” collet. This tool also has a LED light and a micro-adjustment knob for depth setting. Cost: $69 (tool only) $129 (kit with battery, charger, case).
